The Government of Uttarakhand is committed to provide state of art medical facilities to the people of remote hills of the State. After successful establishment of State Medical Institutions at Haldwani (Nainital), Srinagar(Garhwal) and Dehradun during last one decade, a step forward, the State Government decided to establish another medical institute with capacity of 100 MBBS admissions annually in the name of “Soban Singh Jeena Government Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Almora” at district Almora of Kumaun hills of the State . The institute is under sponsorship scheme of Government of India.

The institute is located in two piece land. The Medical College campus of the institute is spread over 25 acres (9.90 hectares) of land known as Moth-free Estate, Pandey Khola, near Vikas Bhawan, Almora. The approach to the Medical College is through the State highway-37 which leads to Vikas Bhawan. The associated teaching hospital of the institute is the pre existing 200 bedded “Govardhan Tewari Government Base Hospital Almora” which is in the process of upgradation to 500 bed capacity. The Hospital is almost 7 Km. away from the medical college campus and is spread over 17.13 acres (6.85 hectares) land. The institute has applied for letter of permission from Medical Council of India for 100 MBBS admissions for the academic year 2019-20.

Message from Director Medical Education

Setting up a medical institute in Himalayan terrains is a difficult task. Given the different geography of the region, it needs more time and finance in bringing these institutes in existence, however the complelling health care needs of the community in the region, made the Government of Uttarakhand to decide on establishing “Soban Singh Jeena Government Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Almora” in Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand. This institute would benefit generations of the people in the region.

Soban Singh Jeena Government Institute of Medical Sciences and Research is situated in beautiful and spiritually rich hills of district Almora of Kumaun region of Uttarakhand. The institute is among the prime projects of the State Government and Government of India with a vision to extend quality of health care to difficuly to reach community of the region by producing future medical professionals and contributing signifiantly in medical research in due course of time.
